Citizen of Heaven

For today you must establish your citizenship in Me.  For your identity and residence must be in My kingdom.  For as the missionary comes to the land to bring My gospel, so must you see yourself in this world.  For you cannot change what written for the world, but you can build My kingdom in this world and in the world to come.  Citizens of heaven can live in this world and still live in My kingdom.  For My kingdom contains this world and the world to come.  My citizens are not subject to the limitations and curses of this world, but can live in the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.  For though these things are not seen by this world, you have received the Spirit of citizenship that reveals the secrets and hidden wisdom of the My kingdom.   Therefore while you live in this world, serve Me with your whole heart and abide in My Kingdom.

John 18:36

Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."

John 17:15-16

My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.

The key I get from this word is that our identity and residence must be in His Kingdom.   This is different than in this world where you can have residence in one country while being a citizen of another.   That does not mean that we are not in this world, only that we are not of this world.  Since we were born again, we are now born into the Kingdom of God which is eternal, meaning that our death here does not change our citizenship in God’s Kingdom.   Let’s look at the definition of ‘citizen’ from Webster:

Citizen (noun)

(1) -An inhabitant of a city or town, especially one who is entitled to rights and  privileges

(2a)-A member of a state

(2b)-A native or naturalized person who owes allegiance to a government and is entitled to protection by it.

(3)-A citizen as distinguished from a servant of the state

So how does this definition line up with the bible?

First, we are to inhabit the Kingdom and are entitled to the rights and privileges of the Kingdom.  Jesus and the disciples who wrote the new testament list many privileges we have in the name of Jesus, not the least of which is to come boldly before the throne of grace to receive mercy and grace at the time of need.

Second, we are members.  Paul states in 1 Corinthians that we are members of His body.  2B also says that we owe our allegiance to Him as the King and that the kingdom will provide protection as Jesus prayed in John 17:15 shown above.

Third, we are not servants of the Kingdom, but we have the Holy Spirit through whom we have received adoption even as sons.

The word ends with a charge to abide in His kingdom.  The word abide was defined by Jesus in John 14, 15, and 16 which leads up to His prayer in John 17 shown above.   A good passage to illustrate this is:

John 15:4-8

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither {can} you, unless you abide in Me.  I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.  By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and {so} prove to be My disciples.

The word abide here is:

3306  meno (men'-o);

a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy): KJV-- abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), X thine own.

This is a critical word for today and should provide both a comfort and a challenge.   The words of Jesus in John 15:6 above warn that if anyone does not continue to abide in Him, then he become a dried branch with dead leaves that is thrown into the fire.  Not a good support for once saved, always saved.   It appears that there are no illegal aliens in His Kingdom.
