Hanukkah

For this is the year to celebrate the true Hanukkah.  For a few will triumph over the Hellenistic culture of religion and reason and restore the temple of My Spirit.  And I will show them My glory.  For their oil will not run out, but will increase in light as the lighting of the menorah.   Will you restore My temple this year?  Will you relight the flames of truth and holiness?   For only a few will win this battle, but the reward is great.

John 10:22-27

Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade.  The Jews gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."

Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me,  but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Commentary

This year Hanukkah is from December 20-28.   I believe from this word that this year Hanukkah has a special prophetic significance.   For this year the world is mired in the Hellenistic culture of human reasoning and materialism.  The Hellenistic culture came with Alexander the Great from Greece who conquered the world prior to the Romans.

The story of Hanukkah is that more than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews, (the Maccabee revolt) defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of God.

When they sought to light the Temple's menorah (the nine branched candelabrum), they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.

To commemorate and publicize these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of Hanukkah. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah (candelabrum) lighting: a single flame on the first night, two on the second evening, and so on till the eighth night of Hanukkah, when all eight lights are kindled.

This year the prophetic word says that a few will once again conquer the Hellenistic spirit of western civilization to establish a cleansed spiritual temple.  It is interesting that this year Greece is facing bankruptcy as a sign of the bankrupt values of the western world.  God will then multiply the oil of the Spirit to keep the light burning and increase as more lights are lighted.   Hanukkah is also called the festival of lights.   It is time for God to manifest his light through the church remnant.  This will manifest as holiness, righteousness, power, and glory.

The scripture in John 10 is prophetic for it was during the celebration of Hanukkah (Feast of Dedication of the temple) that Jesus was challenged to show plainly that He was the Son of God.  I believe that he will meet that challenge for those that are His sheep, that hear His voice, and follow Him.

It is also significant that this story relates to Psalms 40:1-3

I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.  He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

In this scripture the Hebrew word for mud and mire is

3121  yaven (yaw-ven');

from the same as 3196; properly, dregs (as effervescing); hence, mud:

KJV-- mire, miry.

But the proper name form of this word is

3120  Yavan (yaw-vawn');

probably from the same as 3196; effervescing (i.e. hot and active); Javan, the name of a son of Joktan, and of the race (Ionians, i.e. Greeks) descended from him, with their territory; also of a place in Arabia:

KJV-- Javan.

In other words, the Hebrew word for Greek as in the Hellenistic culture is the same as the mud and mire is Psalms 40:2.

Even more interesting is that the actual Hebrew symbols for the word are three lines progressively descending as shown -  Yavenיָוֵן     ( יון ).  This shows the mire drawing you down into its grip (remember that Hebrew reads from right to left).  But this year, we can follow Psalm 40 and ask the Lord to deliver us from the pit of the materialistic and Hellenistic culture and put our feet solidly on the Rock of Jesus. Pray that He will also cleanse your temple and relight the fires of God’s presence in your temple which He will maintain supernaturally for you, as you consecrate yourself in the new oil (anointing) of the Holy Spirit.
